The Secular Humanists of Western Lake Erie are disยญmayed and disยญapยญpointยญed that sevยญerยญal local memยญbers of the Ohio House of Representatives signed on to a letยญter to announce their intenยญtion to subยญvert the will of the votยญers who passed State Issue 1 on November 7th.
The Ohio House Pro-life Caucus issued a press release on November 8th that said in part:
โWe will do everyยญthing in our powยญer to preยญvent our laws from being removed based upon perยญcepยญtion of intentโฆโ
Northwest Ohio memยญbers who signed on to the letยญter include Josh Williams (41), Derek Merrin (42), Susan Manchester (78), Roy Klopfenstein (82), Riordan McClain (87), and Gary Click (88).
State Issue 1, which passed with 56% of the vote on November 7th, added reproยญducยญtive rights to the Ohio conยญstiยญtuยญtion which will remove many of the anti-abortion laws that peoยญple like the pro-life cauยญcus have passed in recent years. The main law to be removed will be the heartยญbeat law which banned aborยญtion after 6 weeks with no excepยญtions. Many tarยญgetยญed regยญuยญlaยญtions that impose an undue burยญden on women getยญting aborยญtions will also be removed. These regยญuยญlaยญtions were added as part of the budยญget process years ago and werenโt subยญject to refยญerยญenยญdum.
Members of the state govยญernยญment take an oath of office that says they will defend the Ohio conยญstiยญtuยญtion. SHoWLE feels that if pro-life memยญbers from NW Ohio canโt move on and feel the need to vioยญlate their oath in order to deny women the right to make their own medยญical deciยญsions, then they need to resign immeยญdiยญateยญly.
Elected offiยญcials ask all us to obey the laws they pass so they should obey the will of the votยญers even if they disยญagree with that deciยญsion.
โWe underยญstand that such an effort isnโt gainยญing tracยญtion in the Ohio House,โ SHoWLE President Douglas Berger statยญed. โBut we feel the need to call out the repยญreยญsenยญtaยญtives who seem to disยญreยญspect the votยญers and democยญraยญcy. We are disยญapยญpointยญed so many in Northwest Ohio signed on to that letยญter and they need to do betยญter.โ
