This weekÂend was the Maumee Summer Fair. SHoWLE was not there this year and I wantÂed to explain why. The first couÂple of years we had a booth there were great. We were on West Wayne Street and we had a lot of foot trafÂfic as we were near the beer and food and the kids zone. Which is the holy triÂfecÂta…

Then in 2023 there was a masÂsive reconÂstrucÂtion of the downÂtown Maumee area and they had to shoe horn everyÂone into a smallÂer footÂprint. The orgaÂnizÂers had us in the very back parkÂing lot next to a toiÂlet. Foot trafÂfic was very much lowÂer than before. We said no probÂlem that when they get the conÂstrucÂtion done things will go back to how it was before.
In 2024, we got our appliÂcaÂtion in as soon as the process opened and we got the very first booth spot on Conant St and we were so hapÂpy. The probÂlem was they rearranged the booth space again and had them all spread up and down Conant. Our booth was at the far westÂern end of the fesÂtiÂval area, across from the Indoor Theater, with most of the action hapÂpenÂing way down by Wayne St. Foot trafÂfic was minÂiÂmal AND the booth next to ours was for the group tryÂing to recall most of the Maumee city counÂcil. They were nice peoÂple but in their zeal to get recall petiÂtions signed they would basiÂcalÂly block Conant St. and what litÂtle foot trafÂfic we did see was way less than if we were furÂther east and the citÂiÂzen group wasÂn’t next to us impedÂing the trafÂfic flow.
The SHoWLE Board decidÂed to sit 2025 out. Besides not believÂing we would have a good spot, the fact we need more than the usuÂal 3 or four peoÂple to help out played a part in the deciÂsion.
I looked at the layÂout they had for 2025 and it was much betÂter than 2024. The booths were mostÂly on Conant and East Wayne and that corÂner was where they setÂup the stage for the bands. I think, if we had been there this year we would have had more conÂtacts and interÂest.
I think too that if the curÂrent fedÂerÂal govÂernÂment is like it is now, we need to be visÂiÂble to those who supÂport our valÂues. We may not be comÂmon to Maumee but we nevÂer had an issue at the Summer Fair.
Let us know what you think? Should we attend the Summer Fair next year?
