The Board of the Secular Humanists of Western Lake Erie urges legÂisÂlaÂtors and our comÂmuÂniÂty memÂbers to oppose Ohio House Bill 616.
HB 616 elimÂiÂnates the abilÂiÂty to teach on and disÂcuss topÂics like sexÂuÂal oriÂenÂtaÂtion, genÂder idenÂtiÂty, and race. If enactÂed, HB 616 would attempt to erase disÂcusÂsion of the hisÂtoÂry and lived expeÂriÂences of marÂginÂalÂized comÂmuÂniÂties and stuÂdents. The bilÂl’s broad lanÂguage will have a chillÂing effect on learnÂing enviÂronÂments.
HB 616’s defÂiÂnÂiÂtion of anti-racist conÂcepts like diverÂsiÂty, equiÂty, and incluÂsion as “inherÂentÂly racist” and its explicÂit menÂtions of interÂsecÂtionÂalÂiÂty and critÂiÂcal race theÂoÂry sugÂgest a focus on the senÂsiÂbilÂiÂties of a narÂrow group of adults, rather than deep engageÂment with the needs and conÂcerns of teachÂers and stuÂdents in Ohio’s K‑3 classÂrooms.
Humanists “comÂmit to treatÂing each perÂson as havÂing inherÂent worth and digÂniÂty” and “long for and strive toward a world of mutuÂal care and conÂcern” (The Third Humanist Manifesto). HB 616 directÂly conÂtraÂdicts our core valÂues by attemptÂing to legÂisÂlate away any disÂcusÂsion of already marÂginÂalÂized groups.
Listening to peoÂple’s stoÂries is at the heart of acknowlÂedgÂing each perÂsonÂ’s inherÂent worth. We can only move toward a world of mutuÂal care by culÂtiÂvatÂing empaÂthy; empaÂthy canÂnot be culÂtiÂvatÂed when the stoÂries, expeÂriÂences, and hisÂtoÂries of marÂginÂalÂized groups are made unspeakÂable.
It is for these reaÂsons that the Board of the Secular Humanists of Western Lake Erie conÂdemns this bill and othÂers like it.
We also encourÂage our memÂbers to comÂmuÂniÂcate with their State House Representative. You can find your repÂreÂsenÂtaÂtive by enterÂing your address at the Ohio House of Representatives webÂsite.
