The Secular Humanists of Western Lake Erie (SHoWLE) urge Toledo city offiÂcials and US Rep. Marcy Kaptur not to insert themÂselves in the effort to save St. Anthony Catholic Church on Nebraska Avenue.
“Seeing Rep. Kaptur and curÂrent and past Toledo electÂed offiÂcials standÂing at a podiÂum with the city of Toledo seal, demandÂing the Diocese of Toledo not tear down St. Anthony is trouÂbling,” Doug Berger, President of SHoWLE said.
The sepÂaÂraÂtion of church and state not only proÂtects the govÂernÂment from reliÂgious intruÂsion but also proÂtects reliÂgion from some intruÂsion by the govÂernÂment.
“It sets a bad preceÂdent, espeÂcialÂly as orgaÂnized reliÂgion conÂtinÂues to lose memÂbers,” Berger said. “The City of Toledo can’t save all the old churchÂes in the city and when it choosÂes not to then that is going to be a no win sitÂuÂaÂtion.”
The Diocese of Toledo, in a stateÂment, wonÂdered where the calls to save the buildÂing were for the past 13 years after it closed and as the buildÂing conÂtinÂued to deteÂriÂoÂrate.
“The govÂernÂment offiÂcials demandÂing the buildÂing not be torn down will stick the Diocese with the repair bills should they preÂvail. The only way for tax dolÂlars to be spent on a renÂoÂvaÂtion and/or reuse would require the propÂerÂty be sold to a non-religious entiÂty at a fair marÂket price,” Berger said.
The misÂleadÂing stateÂment by a comÂmuÂniÂty memÂber that demoÂliÂtion would be a health and safeÂty issue is also a probÂlem.
“If the buildÂing were kept, it would still need any asbestos and lead paint removed and it would have to meet modÂern buildÂing stanÂdards. I don’t think the Diocese hired a fly by night demoÂliÂtion comÂpaÂny who wouldÂn’t take the required preÂcauÂtions in tearÂing down such an old buildÂing.”
The buildÂing is hisÂtorÂiÂcal and sigÂnifÂiÂcant to many peoÂple in the comÂmuÂniÂty but there hasÂn’t been any speÂcifÂic plans from the peoÂple wantÂiÂng to keep it.
SHoWLE believes that Rep. Kaptur and the city of Toledo shouldÂn’t pick sides in the issue and they should stay neuÂtral as called for in the 1st amendÂment.
