**** For Immediate Release ****
April 12, 2021 — Toledo, Ohio:
We are extremeÂly disÂapÂpointÂed in the recent transÂphoÂbic Tweet by Richard Dawkins who is a well known sciÂenÂtist and spokesperÂson for those of us in the freethought comÂmuÂniÂty.
Mr. Dawkins wrongÂly equatÂed a white woman who comÂmitÂted fraud by claimÂing to be black with transÂgenÂder peoÂple as if they are lying about who they are and should expeÂriÂence backÂlash.
Mr. Dawkins also wrongÂly attemptÂed to make his views on transÂgenÂder peoÂple as someÂthing that can be debatÂed like a quesÂtion about culÂture or flaÂvor of ice cream.
Mr. Dawkins demeaned and dehuÂmanÂized an entire subÂset of peoÂple and this is not the first time he has expressed a conÂtrary view about whole groups of peoÂple based on nothÂing but his own biasÂes.
The Secular Humanists of Western Lake Erie can’t stand by withÂout respondÂing. Richard Dawkins doesÂn’t speak for SHoWLE or any of our memÂbers.
Going forÂward SHoWLE will not proÂmote or supÂport any project or event that involves Mr. Dawkins. We will ask the Center for Inquiry to remove him from their board of direcÂtors and spin off the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason & Science housed at CFI. We would like CFI to make a strong stateÂment against Dawkins remarks.
Richard Dawkins has benÂeÂfitÂed from his fame and staÂtus in our comÂmuÂniÂty and the things he says can effect othÂer peoÂple for good and bad. Degrading any humans is totalÂly against our Humanist valÂues and we feel Richard Dawkins needs to apolÂoÂgize and step away from the pubÂlic eye comÂpleteÂly.
For refÂerÂence: Richard Dawkins is Still Denying the Basic Humanity of Trans People
About Secular Humanists of Western Lake Erie
The misÂsion of the Secular Humanists of Western Lake Erie is to proÂvide a supÂportÂive local comÂmuÂniÂty for humanÂists and othÂer nonÂtheÂists, while proÂmotÂing an ethÂiÂcal, reaÂsonÂable, and secÂuÂlar approach to life through eduÂcaÂtion, comÂmuÂniÂty serÂvice, outÂreach, activism, and social events.
We enviÂsion a Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan where secÂuÂlar peoÂple are respectÂed and inteÂgratÂed in broadÂer sociÂety, live valÂues of reaÂson and comÂpasÂsion, and enjoy a friendÂly humanÂist comÂmuÂniÂty.
