On October 14th we had our annuÂal memÂbers meetÂing as required by our bylaws. This is the time memÂbers get a preÂsenÂtaÂtion on the year preÂviÂous includÂing finances. We then hold elecÂtions for the Board of Directors.
SHoWLE has always been a memÂber run group. The memÂbers vote on Board memÂbers and the Board choosÂes the offiÂcers for the day-to-day operÂaÂtion of the group.
Members can always ask quesÂtions and have a right to see the full accountÂing books we keep. Members can call a meetÂing to remove direcÂtors or othÂer memÂbers. All the powÂer rests with the memÂberÂship.
I foundÂed the group in 2018 and wantÂed it to be memÂberÂship run from the beginÂning. Even with being the founder I still nomÂiÂnate myself and subÂject myself to Board elecÂtions. I also subÂject myself to being electÂed as an offiÂcer. At anyÂtime I could decide not be President or not serve on the Board.
This fall I startÂed my 30th year as a leader of a Humanist group. I served on the Board of HCCO in Columbus for 14 years and was President for two years and served as Treasurer for a year. I also serve on the Board and am the treaÂsurÂer for Toledo Integrated Media Education that operÂates WAKT 106.1 FM and the Toledo Free Press newsÂpaÂper.
SHoWLE is a 501 3 ( c ) charÂiÂty under the umbrelÂla of the American Humanist Association. We have to file IRS form 990s each year and in Ohio we have to regÂisÂter with the state since we solÂstice donaÂtions. We are also incorÂpoÂratÂed as non-profit with the state. Because we are a 501 3© donaÂtions are tax exempt. We also updatÂed our Candid (forÂmerÂly Guidestar) proÂfile and got the Platinum Transparency stickÂer for 2025
Last year our income and expensÂes were less than $3000 and that was out of charÂacÂter only because we had the Gloria Steinem speakÂing fees and we sponÂsored the Bronze levÂel for the trafÂfickÂing conÂferÂence our budÂget in 2025 was origÂiÂnalÂly $1800 and that was approved by the Board in November of 2024. I am not paid to be the President — no Board memÂber is paid. Over the years I have perÂsonÂalÂly donatÂed hunÂdreds of dolÂlars to the group as well as hunÂdreds of hours of my time.
Even though our FY2025 stateÂment showed we spent $170 more than we brought in as revÂenue we have more than that in our bank account. Currently we have $600 in the checkÂing account and almost $400 in our savÂings account. 99% of the savÂings is tarÂgetÂed for directÂed donaÂtions to supÂport our projects like the holÂiÂday gift driÂve we do with Lucas County Childrens Services.
My phiÂlosÂoÂphy has been for big tickÂet items, we solicÂit donaÂtions for it and use memÂberÂship dues for items like our postal box and to buy more brochures if needÂed.
I would agree with peoÂple who say we don’t operÂate like a proÂfesÂsionÂal non-profit and that is because we aren’t a proÂfesÂsionÂal non-profit. We aren’t the Boys and Girls Club or the United Way. Our purÂpose is focused on our memÂbers and proÂvidÂing a supÂportÂive, diverse, local comÂmuÂniÂty for humanÂists and othÂer nonÂtheÂists, while proÂmotÂing ethÂiÂcal and reaÂsonÂable secÂuÂlar world views through eduÂcaÂtion, comÂmuÂniÂty serÂvice, outÂreach, activism, and social events.
We have a small memÂberÂship but we aren’t alone. I sit in on zoom calls with othÂer chapÂter leadÂers around the counÂtry and they say the same thing — their memÂberÂship skews oldÂer and they are small too.
SHoWLE is open to all Humanists in subÂstanÂtial agreeÂment with our prinÂciÂples and our proÂgramÂing is based on what our memÂbers want to do. I am open to new ideas and we have tried new things over the years. My idea to encourÂage memÂbers to take on hostÂing duties for an activÂiÂty is someÂthing I startÂed to do last year.
I would love to have our own buildÂing and a paid staff and have proÂgrams for the genÂerÂal pubÂlic like a teen drop in cenÂter but that takes more than dreams — it takes peoÂple willÂing to take a risk and sigÂnifÂiÂcant fundÂing. That’s why we are transÂparÂent as we are, why we accept memÂbers in agreeÂment with our prinÂciÂples and we try to do outÂreach like our info booth and podÂcast.
Members are free to reach out to me or othÂer Board memÂbers with quesÂtions about finances or the operÂaÂtion of the group and if you have an issue we want to hear details so we can work with you to resolve those issues.
