Humanists Ask Toledo Officials Not To Insert Themselves In Saving St. Anthony

The Secular Humanists of Western Lake Erie (SHoWLE) urge Toledo city offiĀcials and US Rep. Marcy Kaptur not to insert themĀselves in the effort to save St. Anthony Catholic Church on Nebraska Avenue.

ā€œSeeing Rep. Kaptur and curĀrent and past Toledo electĀed offiĀcials standĀing at a podiĀum with the city of Toledo seal, demandĀing the Diocese of Toledo not tear down St. Anthony is trouĀbling,ā€ Doug Berger, President of SHoWLE said.

The sepĀaĀraĀtion of church and state not only proĀtects the govĀernĀment from reliĀgious intruĀsion but also proĀtects reliĀgion from some intruĀsion by the govĀernĀment.

ā€œIt sets a bad preceĀdent, espeĀcialĀly as orgaĀnized reliĀgion conĀtinĀues to lose memĀbers,ā€ Berger said. ā€œThe City of Toledo can’t save all the old churchĀes in the city and when it choosĀes not to then that is going to be a no win sitĀuĀaĀtion.ā€

The Diocese of Toledo, in a stateĀment, wonĀdered where the calls to save the buildĀing were for the past 13 years after it closed and as the buildĀing conĀtinĀued to deteĀriĀoĀrate.

ā€œThe govĀernĀment offiĀcials demandĀing the buildĀing not be torn down will stick the Diocese with the repair bills should they preĀvail. The only way for tax dolĀlars to be spent on a renĀoĀvaĀtion and/or reuse would require the propĀerĀty be sold to a non-religious entiĀty at a fair marĀket price,ā€ Berger said.

The misĀleadĀing stateĀment by a comĀmuĀniĀty memĀber that demoĀliĀtion would be a health and safeĀty issue is also a probĀlem.

ā€œIf the buildĀing were kept, it would still need any asbestos and lead paint removed and it would have to meet modĀern buildĀing stanĀdards. I don’t think the Diocese hired a fly by night demoĀliĀtion comĀpaĀny who wouldĀn’t take the required preĀcauĀtions in tearĀing down such an old buildĀing.ā€

The buildĀing is hisĀtorĀiĀcal and sigĀnifĀiĀcant to many peoĀple in the comĀmuĀniĀty but there hasĀn’t been any speĀcifĀic plans from the peoĀple wantĀiĀng to keep it.

SHoWLE believes that Rep. Kaptur and the city of Toledo shouldĀn’t pick sides in the issue and they should stay neuĀtral as called for in the 1st amendĀment.

Secular Humanists Make The Newspaper

The Secular Humanists of Western Lake Erie had a nice write up in the reliĀgion secĀtion of the Toledo Blade. The print verĀsion took up nearĀly half a page and was above the fold. We could nevĀer afford adverĀtisĀing that good.

To quesĀtion whether morals and valĀues can exist apart from theĀolĀoĀgy cuts to the heart of secĀuĀlar humanĀism. While atheĀism simĀply denotes that an indiĀvidĀual does not believe in God, secĀuĀlar humanĀism ā€œkind of takes that a step furĀther,ā€ Ms. Meagley said; it answers the ā€œnow whatā€ quesĀtion that, for some, folĀlows when a perĀson comes to terms with a disĀbeĀlief in God.

Secular humanism’s affirĀmaĀtion of an ethĀiĀcal life sugĀgests parĀalĀlels between the ways that a conĀsciĀenĀtious reliĀgious adherĀent and a conĀsciĀenĀtious humanĀist would live. But a humanĀist, sigĀnifĀiĀcantĀly, would do so withĀout tying these views and valĀues to theĀism or the superĀnatĀurĀal.

First Meeting A Success

Nice Crowd at first meeting

Secular Humanists of Western Lake Erie (SHoWLE) met for the first time offiĀcialĀly on May 5th. We had a dozen humanĀists interĀestĀed in the group and movĀing forĀward.

The interĀest was so great that we were able to have enough AHA memĀbers to sign our chapĀter appliĀcaĀtion and we had sevĀerĀal peoĀple interĀestĀed in servĀing on the steerĀing comĀmitĀtee. This comĀmitĀtee will help develĀop the forĀmal strucĀture of the group as we become a chapĀter.

ā€œI think it shows how needĀed a group like this is in Toledo and our PR camĀpaign helped get the word out,ā€ Co-founder Doug Berger said. ā€œI am over the moon at the numĀber who attendĀed today withĀout any preĀviĀous hisĀtoĀry.ā€

Berger led the meetĀing and gave a preĀsenĀtaĀtion about the group and what he would like to see hapĀpen in the future. There was a good disĀcusĀsion periĀod where the conĀsenĀsus was that there needs to be a group that can help proĀtect the 1st amendĀment and conĀcern that our group is too small to be effecĀtive.

ā€œI underĀstand the conĀcern,ā€ Berger said latĀer. ā€œWe need to start small and grow into some of the ideas I have for the group. I have no probĀlem with that.ā€

The next meetĀing will be on June 16th 2018 at 11 am at The 577 Foundation 577 East Front St.  Perrysburg, Ohio 43551 (just west of East Boundary St.)

Berger will also being doing a preĀsenĀtaĀtion about church and state issues in the Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan area.

All meetĀings of SHoWLE are free and open to the pubĀlic.

A New Dawn For Humanism In Toledo

A new day is dawnĀing over Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan. From Monroe to Findlay and from Sandusky to Defiance, a new group is formĀing to give a safe space and comĀmuĀniĀty to peoĀple who are secĀuĀlar humanĀists.

Secular Humanists of Western Lake Erie (SHoWLE) valĀues peoĀple, emphaĀsizes reaĀson, and focusĀes on this world. Our purĀpose is eduĀcatĀing the pubĀlic about Humanism and buildĀing a Humanist comĀmuĀniĀty in Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan. Membership is open to all Humanists in subĀstanĀtial agreeĀment with our prinĀciĀples and valĀues. Our regĀuĀlar meetĀings and schedĀuled events will be free and open to the pubĀlic.

SHoWLE will be havĀing an orgaĀniĀzaĀtionĀal meetĀing on May 5th, 2018 at 1 PM in the meetĀing room at the Washington Branch of the Toledo Public Library 5560 Harvest Lane Toledo OH 43623. The plan is to hold regĀuĀlar monthĀly meetĀings and become a chapĀter of the American Humanist Association.

Humanism is a demoĀcĀraĀtĀic and ethĀiĀcal lifesĀtance which affirms that human beings have the right and responĀsiĀbilĀiĀty to give meanĀing and shape to their own lives. It stands for the buildĀing of a more humane sociĀety through an ethics based on human and othĀer natĀurĀal valĀues in a spirĀit of reaĀson and free inquiry through human capaĀbilĀiĀties. It is not theĀisĀtic, and it does not accept superĀnatĀurĀal views of realĀiĀty.

For most, humanĀism is an alterĀnaĀtive to reliĀgion. In many casĀes and sitĀuĀaĀtions there is a humanĀist alterĀnaĀtive to probĀlems we see in the world. We feel that in the Toledo area, that alterĀnaĀtive isn’t being heard. or at least being addressed.

We are lookĀing to build a strong core of indiĀvidĀuĀals who share Humanist valĀues and who want to build a vibrant comĀmuĀniĀty for Humanists
